It’s not that unusual to see 18th century costuming in movies, but it is a nice change of pace to see costumes from before the American Revolution or what common folk wore. I’ve been struck by the graceful simplicity of the designs. Which of course means that I want to make one.

Usually I check out the latest books at two of my favourite book stores for art and fashion books in Sydney Australia when I go on a fabric-buying trip for myself to see if any books are worth buying. Anyhow, I took a chance and bought the book and was so excited when it arrived in the mail. I think my expectations were a little high as I was disappointed with, what seemed to be, a lack of content.

Nikola March 26, 11 Comments While I could write a book on the topic of magazine history I will briefly describe the history of the magazines and tell you some of the most interesting details about them. Although this is long article it is probably one of the shortest on the topic of the magazine history because I have not mentioned many magazines that left their significant mark in the publishing industry. Le Mercure Galant was one of the first printed publications.
Household Words was an English weekly magazine published in the s by Charles Dickens. It was a literary and philosophical edition and after it was launched several periodicals with very similar topics were published, and were intended for an intellectual audience. Thematic scope was very narrow, and it was mainly written by one author.
It combines topics from court events, theater and literature, and this magazine concept was copied throughout Europe.

Anyway, I went on Saturday with my best-flea-market-buddy-ever, Lauren and you should definitely go lurk her blog if you enjoy being jealous of beautiful white crocheted lace dresses, because, hot damn. On the flip side, it meant that all the sellers brought out their big guns this month… and we made out like bandits. This is the very first thing I bought — like, within 15 minutes of getting there. The buttons are mother-of-pearl with gold edges. She said it was late 30s, I said early 40s.
She said she knew her vintage, I said I know my sewing patterns.

I’d put off watching it for awhile even though I heard many good things about it because I didn’t think I’d like it, but then I gave it a chance and was hooked from the first episode. The sociopolitical depth of the issues involved! And, not least among the many rewards of watching Call the Midwife, is that it features a lot of needlework and knitwear.
Midwife Chummy is a highly skilled seamstress out of self-defense, I am sure, because as a 6’1″ woman in the s, almost none of the readymade garments then available would have fit her , the nuns of Nonatus House have a daily needlecraft hour during which they make items for charity, the mothers of Poplar are frequently seen knitting, and the entire cast, from the midwives to the mothers to the random extras to the babies, regularly sport delightful vintage style knitwear. However, for a show that does usually nail all its period details, Call the Midwife did demonstrate an absurd disregard for accuracy in episode eight of season two.

Make Your Own Baby Sling! Baby Z snoozing contentedly in a ring sling made by her Grandmommy Beryl I mentioned a while back that in addition to sewing up dozens of cloth diapers, my mother also made us a whole host of baby carriers for wearing little Z. And Masheka and I took an excellent free Babywearing workshop at Metro Minis in Manhattan to learn about five major types of baby carriers pouches, slings, mei tais, soft structured carriers and wraps and how to use them safely.
The safest position for small infants is an inward-facing front carry, tummy-to-tummy with baby up high enough on the sternum that you can kiss the top of her head. Baby’s head is to the side, with plenty of clearance so she isn’t chin-to-chest. The above is one of the ring slings my mother made, my current favorite for around-the-house babywearing. She just used a piece of reversible upholstery fabric she got at Jo-Ann’s with some baby-wearing-quality ring slings purchased from SlingRings.
I’m not sure which one she used, but it has a pleated shoulder and a handy pocket on the tail and she tells me it was a super-easy and quick project not to mention much less expensive than commercial ring slings.
