How many of the thousands of people lining the embankments who witness our progress downstream knew there were lifeboats on the Thames in London — and have been since ? The answer is probably very few. According to a YouGov poll conducted in only 16 per cent of Londoners were aware that the RNLI, which celebrates its th birthday this year, operates a search and rescue service on the river through the capital.
It is a disappointing finding for a charity that uses a largely volunteer workforce and receives not a penny from central or local government, relying almost exclusively on public donations and legacies.
